Exhibit Details
Discoveryland Gallery
For the enjoyment of children 8 and under and will feature five areas: Tot Galaxy, Infant Care Room, Sky High, Cloud Burst & Blue Sky.
Tot Galaxy: Toddler Area
Tot Galaxy is specifically designed for infants and toddlers, 0-2 years of age, and their caregivers. It addresses a range of developmentally appropriate challenges so that infants and toddlers have the opportunity to learn about themselves, learn about others, acquire thinking skills, and expand their fine and gross motor skills.
The core experiences of this area are set within the context of a Sun Dome, a challenging fine and gross motor skill environment. Surrounding exhibits focus on cognitive and sensory experiences. The Sun Dome is an iconic structure that anchors the theme for the entire Gallery.
Infant Care Room: A Special Place for Baby – is a private area specially designed for parents to care for their newborn babies and infants. Chairs for nursing mothers, a change table, and sanitation facilities accessed directly from the Gallery will allow parents to tend to the needs of their infant children.
Sky High: Role-Playing Area
Sky High is designed as a role-playing environment that enables preschoolers to engage in make-believe play, enhancing their communication and social abilities. Role-playing also stimulates their imagination, allows them to act out solutions to problems, and helps them acquire new skills through specific challenging tasks.
This environment is designed around an interpreted jet airplane flying over the clouds. The airplane is defined by key design components set appropriately in the space, allowing a free flow circulation inside and outside of the “flying” structure.
Cloud Burst: Discovery Water-Play Area
Cloud Burst focuses on water-play, providing visitors with problem-solving and logical thinking learning experiences. This area provides a unique opportunity for preschoolers to engage in playful scientific exploration of both the physical and esthetic properties of water, a precious natural resource.
On this level, visitors are immersed inside a whimsical interpretation of a cloud. Colours and shapes are reminiscent of the wide variety of rain-heavy clouds. These clouds provide another key visual icon of the Gallery’s theme, helping to create a sense of environment for visitors of all ages.
Blue Sky: Creative Play Area
Blue Sky is a creative play area inviting children to engage in self-expression activities. Imaginative building, creating and performing are key experiences which will help nurture a sense of self-esteem. The area also allows children to explore their relationships with others by encouraging co-operative play.
This area explores the environment between the treetops and the clouds, filled with flying creatures and objects floating above the "city". A tree house perched on a treetop next to a blue-sky mural completes the thematic scenery visible through the Gallery.
